A Reflection

When Healing Stopped Being the Goal

Healing helped me survive. Purpose is teaching me how to live.

I do not remember the day my prayers changed. I only know they did.

Somewhere between asking God to help me survive and asking Him what I was meant to build, something inside me had already begun to shift. Looking back, I think that was the moment healing stopped being the goal.

For a long time, healing had to be the goal. When life asks everything of you, there is not much room to think about anything else. You are simply trying to make it through.

To breathe again.

To believe again.

To trust again.

Healing became the work in front of me. Some days it looked like prayer. Some days it looked like silence. Some days it looked like sitting with things I would have rather outrun. There was a season when that work was enough. It needed to be.

But healing has a quiet way of changing us. Not all at once. Not in dramatic moments. Little by little, it gives us enough strength to begin asking different questions.

I did not notice when my questions changed. One day I realized I was no longer spending all of my time asking, "How do I get through this?" Instead, I found myself asking, "What am I building?"

That question surprised me. Not because I suddenly had everything figured out. But because it revealed something I had not noticed. My life was no longer organized around surviving. It was beginning to organize itself around purpose.

Purpose did not arrive all at once. It arrived in ordinary ways.

It looked like finishing a manuscript I had carried for years.

It looked like creating a website that finally reflected who I was becoming.

It looked like telling stories instead of hiding them.

It looked like imagining a home before I had the keys.

It looked like studying, saving, writing, praying, and preparing.

None of those things felt extraordinary on their own. Together, they were telling a different story. I was building again.

Healing did not disappear. There are still places in me where growth is happening. There are still prayers I whisper. There are still moments that ask me to slow down. But healing is no longer the thing leading my life. Purpose quietly took its place.

That does not mean I have arrived. It means I have started walking in a different direction.

I used to imagine a peaceful life.

Now I am preparing one.

Brick by brick.

Conversation by conversation.

Story by story.

Prayer by prayer.

Looking back, I do not think healing was ever meant to become the place where I stayed. I think it was preparing me for the work I was always meant to do.

Healing gave me back my life. Purpose is teaching me how to live it.

If your prayers still sound like survival, do not rush them. There is no timetable for becoming whole. But if one day you notice your questions beginning to change, do not be afraid of that either. It may be the quiet beginning of purpose.

Sometimes healing does not end. Sometimes it simply stops being the center of the story.
